Grace Catherine Zinck was born October 27th 2003. Six weeks before she was born we found out that she would be very sick. During a routine ultrasound our baby was found to have a large heart defect and to be very small. At that time we had an amniocentesis and were given devastating news. Our unborn child, a baby girl had Trisomy 18. Trisomy 18 is a genetic condition that is considered "incompatible with life". We chose to continue our pregnancy and offer comfort care to our daughter if we would be lucky enough that she was born alive.
Grace came home from the hospital when she was 3 days old. she was eating and sleeping like any normal newborn. She was initially signed up for hospice and we thought our time with her would be short. Grace graduated from hospice at 6 months of age. Although she is small and somewhat delayed she is so "normal" to us. She started crawling at one, walking at two, and even speaking. Grace attends First grade, plays with friends and does most things and average 8 year old does. These are all simple milestones we never thought Grace would accomplish. Grace is the proud and loving older sister to her brother Brendan and sister Audrey. They are best friends and have taught each other so much.
We have no idea what the future hold for our daughter. We are so blessed with the time we have had with her and the amazing life lessons that she has taught us. She has touched so many lives and continues to bring joy to everyone she comes in contact with.
